VP Binay, Erap form new coalition for 2013 polls?

4
Vice President Jejomar Binay and former President Joseph Estrada are joining forces once again in a new coalition that is expected to field senatorial candidates in the 2013 midterm elections.

In separate phone interviews Wednesday, Sen. Koko Pimentel and Binay's spokesman Joey Salgado told GMA News Online that the Vice President's Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) and Estrada's Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) formed a coalition called the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

UNA filed its registration application before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) last Friday, beating the March 30 deadline, Pimentel said.

Under their previous coalition–United Opposition (UNO)–PMP president Estrada ran for President and PDP-Laban chair Binay for Vice President in the 2010 elections.

Pimentel said they decided to change the coalition’s name because UNO is no longer "applicable."

"When we changed the name, it really goes to show it's not anti-LP (Liberal Party), hindi ito anti-Noynoy," he said, referring to President Benigno Aquino III’s nickname.

President Aquino is the LP chair.

The aim is to create an alliance of candidates whose main thrust is to alleviate poverty in the Philippines, Pimentel noted.

In an interview with reporters Wednesday, Malacañang deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte said that the Palace will defer any comment on the matter.

"Doon naman po sa iba, nagpe-prepare na rin po talaga for 2013… So, I suppose that’s normal for whoever wants to participate in the 2013 elections," she said.

Possible senatorial bets

Among the possible UNA candidates in the 2013 senatorial race are Pimentel, San Juan Rep. Joseph Victor "JV" Ejercito, Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile, Senators Francis Escudero, Loren Legarda, and defeated senatorial bet Joey De Venecia, Salgado noted.

Pimentel is the PDP-Laban president and Jack Enrile–son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile–is the PMP chair.

UNA is also inviting former Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar, and Senators Gregorio Honasan and Alan Peter Cayetano to run under the coalition, Salgado said. "May invitation na sa kanila to be part of the alliance. May discussion din ngayon with some parties."

Pimentel, however, said "nothing is really sure" until they have filed their certificates of candidacy.

Because of Estrada and Binay, the alliance will probably yield favorable results, he noted.

"Medyo malakas siya kasi nung 2010 nanalo tayo sa vice president tapos ang president second placer… so, medyo malakas, tapos ang sensatorial bets [din nanalo]," he said.

Members of PDP-Laban increased "substantially" after Binay won in the 2010 elections, Salgado likewise said.

PMP won five seats in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate, while PDP-Laban gained two seats in the House and one in the Senate.

In the 2010 elections, the Comelec identified then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Lakas-Kampi-CMD as the majority party, with LP as the minority and PMP, PDP-Laban, Nacionalista Party-Nationalist People's Coalition, Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, and Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL) as the major parties.
